Guiding Star by Scott56 Guiding Star by Scott56
Graphite pencil on Arches paper
22X30"

This drawing is dedicated to a very important person in my life. Whenever life’s circumstances go right or wrong, she is there to help me remember what is important. It is to remember that there is hope and to guide my perspective to stay faithful in whatever God has provided. She led me to know Christ at the early age of 5 and I am forever grateful. For everything good and decent I have done in my life, I can thank her for guiding me in the ways of wisdom and understanding. This drawing does not even grace the magnitude of the impact she has on everybody in her life. Here is to you mom.

This is one of the most inredible realistic drawings I've ever seen. Usually what you look at the higher res version you can see something that gives it away as a drawing, but with this one I can see nothing. Amazing work.

OMG This is absolutely a masterpiece. So realistic, so balances, so peaceful and powerful. I love the contrasts, the deep dark tones and the beautiful lights and highlights. Everything is detailed to perfection yet keeping the softness of a natural portrait. Amazing and a well deserved :+fav: and I do hope you'll get a DD for this!

May I ask you if you used the front or the back of Arches paper for this portrait? And what did you use for the darkest areas? Charcoal? Carbon pencils? Or just graphite?

Thanks Luca! I have kind of let the "crickets chirp" here on my DA account. Perhaps I lost the DA fire?? LOL It is fun to surf around here but hoping for a DD is a prayer (for anyone). Actually, I DID use the back of the Arches paper. Good guess! And for the darks? 9b woodcase. It shines plenty but take a light graphite covered brush and lightly go over it again and it seems to take some of that out. Plus, I think the shine dissipates with time and almost look more natural behind glass and a glossy black matte. Thanks for the great compliment and checking in!

It seems I am the only one that have troubles with the back of Arches paper... I don't know why, but it seems to me that if I wanna draw a straight line, the back of the paper makes it tremulous... not as sharp as I want it, while the front responds perfectly to every single line. Even erasing with a kneaded eraser is much clean and easier than on the back of the paper.
I've heard that the shine of graphite can be attenuated a little with some good fixative spray too. Did you use one btw?

Hmmm it looks like they need to update those Arches printing presses in Europe :) J/K That paper is not for everyone, I have just grown used to the negatives of it. The paper has a warm hue which I could not get used to for the longest time, but now I found a photoshop adjustment that makes it look more natural and accepting as a drawing. You can decrease the shine with fixative! However, buy a high end fixative spray. I have had sprays in the past make water spots in light areas and it is not worth spraying "just graphite" drawings in my opinion. But it is really up to the artists. It may even help preserve it for 100 years! I'll just settle for a shorter term life span and have those highlights untouched by water spots. Great questions!

I've tried several fixative sprays in the past and actually I'm liking a lot Caran d'Ache and Winsor&Newton ones.
Hahhahahah really you should send me some GOOD Arches paper :D :D :D ...mmh I'll give the back side another chance in the future maybe... ;)

Thanks Franco, I wish I could draw fast with very good quality like yours! I am extremely slow at most things. So trust me, speed is valuable! (as far as making any money with your art). This took a full 7 months averaging 3 hours a day. I am glad how it turned out but taking the photo was difficult with the shine. A black matte bumped up to the side helps get rid of most of it.

I'm not so fast, Scott. I just have many drawings I made in the last three years :D Right now I spent something about 60 - 70 hours. Not the best for commissions. Anyway, the time is the last thing you think when you look at a great work :D
